Celebrating 6 Years of Polytoria!

news

Today marks the 6th anniversary of Polytoria! Exactly six years ago today, Polytoria first opened it's doors to the public. What started out as a few hundred players on day one quickly became to a large community of almost 60.000 players.

In this blog post, we’re taking a moment to look back at where we started, how far we’ve come, and where we’re heading next. Whether you’re an avid user or just checking by, this is a celebration for all of us!

Looking back

A lot has changed over the past few years. Polytoria has undergone many design changes, site rewrites and much more. Here's a throwback to 2020, when Polytoria was still called Superium and we only had a fraction of the players we have today!

Originally, the Polytoria client didn't have scripting. To make gameplay more exciting, every place had an option to turn built-in tools on or off (read more about it here!). Here's some old footage of the classic Valley of Apples map with brickbattle tools enabled!

Behind the scenes

While most of our updates make it into the spotlight, there's a whole world of features we've tested behind the scenes that never quite made it to the public... until now!

We've showcased Polytoria in VR earlier in a blog post, but here's some more footage of the Great Divide being played in VR.

Out of all the requests we get, one stands above the rest: a mobile version of Polytoria. We hear you, and believe us, it hasn’t fallen on deaf ears. We’ve been experimenting with mobile versions of the platform multiple times over the years, and it's something we continue to explore. That being said, here's some old experimental footage of a mobile version of the client!

Development of what we now know as the current Polytoria client officially began on October 11, 2021. What started as a fresh codebase quickly turned into something special. Within just a few days, we had already laid the groundwork for many of the core features that players enjoy today. Want to see how far we’ve come? Check out this early in-development footage of the current Polytoria client in action!

Some of the earliest video footage of Polytoria's current client. The player was just a cube.

Just a few days later, some basic form of scripting was possible, and a player character was added.

Only 9 days after development started, the client already started to look a lot more alive.

One month later, and the client looked a lot like we know it today!

What's next?

Even if it’s not always visible on the surface, the team is hard at work behind the scenes. Week after week, we’re making steady progress - fixing bugs, experimenting with new ideas and laying the groundwork for future updates. We have a major event coming up really soon, so keep an eye out on that! On top of that, we're planning some significant changes to our engagement team to help strengthen our connection with the community. Expect more activity, more communication and more ways to get involved with Polytoria. Over the years, we've built a solid platform, and we're ready to take it to the next level!

A Message to the Community

The Polytoria team wants to thank every player for being part of our community. Whether you’ve been here since day one or you just joined last week, you've made Polytoria what it is today. Your feedback is valuable, your creativity is inspiring and your support helps us move forward!

As we celebrate this milestone, it's more than looking back at the past. We're looking ahead of what's to come, our best days are yet to come. Keep creating and exploring, and from the entire Polytoria team: thank you for being apart of this amazing community!

Until next time!
